Assignment #3: Written Reflection
Written Reflection
For my photographic essay, I chose the option where you capture a day in the life of someone that you know. For my assignment, I picked my roommate Brynn, because I am with her for the majority of the day. I conceptualized my project by selecting a day when I would be with her the most, that way, I could capture the most pictures. I also made sure that we would be doing interesting events, so that the images wouldn't be so boring.
For this assignment we were supposed to focus on the quality of light, the composition, the narrative, and the emotional impact of the images. While I was shooting throughout the day, I tried my best to incorporate all of these components. For starters, I made sure to take plenty of pictures in the morning and during the evening, because I know that the light is best during these times. The assignment required me to take pictures all throughout the day, but some of my best shots turned out to be the ones in the morning light. Next, I was cautious about the composition during my pictures, I didn't want any extraneous objects within the picture that would distract from the main subject. I often either zoomed in on my camera or I moved closer to my roommate. Next, I made sure my pictures fit the photographic essay narrative. I only shot pictures of my roommate and the actions that she took through the course of her day. Lastly, I made sure to capture all of her emotions throughout the day. I captured pictures when she was happy, sorrowful, and when she was stressed. For example, I took pictures of her after her first practice when she was happy and then when she was stressed while attempting a homework assignment.
After completing this assignment, I learned how to take pictures using the auto bracket on a camera. I also learned that it can be difficult to take pictures during the middle of the day. The light during this time is almost too harsh on a person and can make the picture not look the best. If I were to do this assignment again, I think I would have gone to a more populated place and taken pictures with people in the background. I think by using a small aperture, it would blur the background out and the people would look blurred as well. I attempted to do this at night, on a street, but there weren't many people out during this time of the day.
